Music & Ritual

Ritual is an innate part of the human life. Ritual whether in the form of an invocation, a sacrifice, a fast or a penance, a holy dip in a river, ringing the bells, a prayer or an aarti they all contribute to disciplining the mind to focus. Every spiritual and religious tradition uses music to help in focussing, explains Prateeksha Sharma.

Harold Pinter passed away on 24 December 2008. He was 78. Like most Nobel prizes for Literature, explains Keval Arora, the choice of the British playwright Harold Pinter has also had its share of detractors. Are You a Happy Camper?
What makes you happy?  Have you ever given any thought to what makes you the kind of “jumping for joy, singing in the rain” happy, that leaves you grinning from ear to ear for no apparent reason? When I was younger, it was material things: Now, it’s the simple things in life:  Read More...

Off the Mantle #23
The First City Theatre Readings
The Architect
the significant prose of George Orwell
February 5 | 7pm | The Attic, 36 Regal Building, Connaught Place

The British author George Orwell achieved prominence in the late 1940s as the author of two brilliant satires - Animal Farm and 1984. His other writing included essays, polemics, memoirs and criticism that established him as one of the most important and influential voices of the century. His work is marked by a profound consciousness of social injustice, an intense dislike of totalitarianism, and a passion for clarity in language.
TR Fyvel, one of Orwell's biographers wrote: "His crucial experience ... was his struggle to turn himself into a writer, one which led through long periods of poverty, failure and humiliation, and about which he has written almost nothing directly. The sweat and agony was less in the slum-life than in the effort to turn the experience into literature."

The First City Theatre Foundation presents a reading of his essays, and excerpts from Down and Out in Paris and London and his novels.

Daily Flog

PM's Medical Team

My question is – what is the composition of the team of medical doctors treating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh? Has proper representation been given to the doctors from the backwards classes and SCs/STs? And since, according to Dr Manmohan Singh, Muslims have the first right over the country’s resources, shouldn’t the team treating the country’s prime minister be headed by a Muslim doctor?

Shouldn't the prime minister follow his own prescription for the country?
Krishan Tyagi
