Calcutta in 1800, the Indian jewel in British dominated colonial India saw the growth of the first public theater in India, informs Gouri Nilakantan.   The rise of Bengali theater in the 19th century was the direct offshoot of the British occupation in Bengal.    Bengal especially Calcutta, under the influence of the British saw the emergence of many societies and centers of learning and thus the environment of the city of Calcutta was conducive for intellectual growth.
